Brussels Griffon
american

The BRUSSELS GRIFFON is outgoing, intelligent, affectionate and spunky. It can be a challenge to train and should be enrolled in obedience classes at an early age (especially since some Brussels bark excessively) . Some of these little dogs are friendly with strangers; others are timid. Early contact with humans and other animals is encouraged for proper socialization.

While this dog enjoys a good romp, vigorous daily exercise is not mandatory for its health and happiness. It is satisfied with leisurely walks and the chance to lie by its owner's side. The Brussels Griffon should be combed and brushed a few times a week and trimmed about four times a year.

This breed, which originated in Brussels in the 19th century, is probably the descendant of the back-ally "rat dog" of the time, which provided help with rodent infestation problems. The Brussels Griffon of today resulted from crossings with other breeds, such as the Pug, Affenpinscher and Ruby Spaniel.
