The DACHSHUND is not a lap dog. Its name means "badger dog", and this describes the task for which it was bred. It is an outstanding hunter of animals in underground dens. Everyone knows Dachshunds have short, crooked legs, but there is a reason for these funny-looking legs: they are useful for digging fox, badgers and rabbits out of their holes. People often make fun of Dachshunds, but this ridicule is far from deserved. After all, the dogs can't help loving too much or having too good an appetite. The Dachshund is a tough, courageous, and active dog; affectionate, clever, and without any complexes whatsoever. It is very self-confident and will not put up with any nonsense, which is why this dog should not be left unsupervised with children. Due to their elongated body and short little legs, excessive use of stairs should be avoided. The long-haired variety is said to be somewhat gentler and more docile than the smooth, and the wire-haired somewhat more aggressive and unpredictable. Dachshunds in general are extremely self-willed. There is hardly another breed that resists training as mush as the Dachshund. It is extremely inventive in finding ways to avoid obeying commands, but if it is trained early - with quiet authority and patient persistence - the result will be a dog of great personality and originality. Anyone, however, who refuses to take this trouble, may end up with a grumpy, astonishingly impolite dog. A purebred Dachshund that has learned to behave, on the other hand, is a treasure, endowed with a great sense of humor, amazing daring, and absolute loyalty.
