The LABRADOR RETRIEVER was originally pure black and was bred to work in the water, which is why it has a water-repellent coat and webbed feet. It has become one of the most popular companion dogs, especially among owners of sport utility vehicles. It is one of the world’s best family dogs and can be kept under almost any conditions because it is so sensitive, adaptable, and imperturbable. It is up to the owner to do right by this wonderful dog; the dog itself will hardly ever assert any demands of its own. However, to keep this dog in a small city apartment without sufficient exercise is unfair and unconscionable, and so is not letting it swim regularly. Labradors were “invented” for the water, and diving for sticks is one of life’s requirements for them, regardless of the weather.
The Labrador Retriever is good-natured, willing to learn, and fond of eating. The last trait can be its downfall, for an overfed Labrador is a very dull dog. One that is kept in good trim, on the other hand, is a wonderful playmate for children, an outstanding helper of handicapped or blind people, ad a great narcotics detective. It cannot be kept in a kennel because it feels lost without human company, and it is hopeless as a watchdog because distrust has no room in its generous heart. It would be more than happy to show any thief the way to the refrigerator. |
