The LHASA APSO was originally kept by Buddhist monks to act as sentinel of their monasteries. It was also a bringer of good luck and was presented as such by the Dalai Lhama to specially chosen recipients. On account of this, the Lhasa Apso has been treated with great seriousness and respect for centuries - an attitude this dog expects from those around it in the modern Western world, too. The Lhasa is a very self-confident, lively dog that loves its family, but is suspicious of strangers - a quality that dates back to its days as a Tibetan watchdog. But once it has had a chance to become acquainted with the newcomers, it is outgoing and without a trace of aggression. The Lhasa Apso is a small dog with a big personality, independent, and strong-minded. It is a demanding dog that definitely is no lap dog and doesn't want to be one. It is not ideal around small children because it is not particularly patient, and doesn't put up with being mauled. The owner has to establish clearly from the beginning who is in charge, or else the Lhasa Apso can turn into a full-fledged despot. Yet, it is playful and loving at heart and accepts training happily. In recent years, this dog has become very popular, and it is therefore important to find a good, conscientious breeder if you want to buy a puppy.
