Schnauzer

The SCHNAUZER is really a rough-haired Pinscher and owes its name to its magnificent beard. The Standard Schnauzer used to be a very popular breed in Swabia in southwestern Germany, where it lived under modest circumstances. It was kept on farms as a watchdog and to catch rats. In keeping with this background, even the Miniature Schnauzer has preserved the breed's unpretentious nature. The Schnauzer is honest, brave, affectionate, daring and faithful. It is a very lively dog without being restless or nervous, but does need things to do and long walks, no matter what the weather. It loves both work and play, and immerses itself in any situation completely and with boundless enthusiasm. The Schnauzer is definitely intelligent, but also wily, willfull, and stubborn, with a rare sense of humor. It needs consistent subordination training with periodic refresher lessons. The teaching has to be firm and authoritative, but done kindly because the Schnauzer will respond with instant rebellion if it is yanked by the collar. Its all-consuming desire is to be included in its people's doings, and it therefore will adjust to any living conditions. It will make the best of wherever it finds itself as long as its people take it as seriously as it takes itself. The Schnauzer is an excellent watchdog and can learn anything required to be a pleasant member of the family.
