Sheltie |
The SHELTIE or (SHETLAND SHEEPDOG) is probably descended from the Collie. In any case, it looks exactly like a miniature edition of its Scottish cousin. The Sheltie was originally a herding dog on the Shetland Islands, but today it is kept primarily as a lovely and very charming companion dog. It is smart, gentle, obedient, and highly sensitive, which is why some dogs can also be very nervous. The Sheltie is a spirited and active dog, but can quite easily be kept in the city if taken on enough walks or bicycle trips. Reserved and sometimes even timid with strangers, it should be introduced to many different people, and be accustomed to loud noise and new situations from the time it is a puppy. Shelties get along well with other animals, learn easily, and always try to please their master. They react very well to basic and positive obedience training. The Sheltie is a loving and responsive little dog and should never be treated roughly. It responds much better to a cooperative approach and positive reinforcement than to punitive measures. Anyone wishing to acquire a Sheltie should do some careful research when looking for a breeder because, timid, easily spooked, yippy and hyperactive dogs are not uncommon among this basically wonderful breed.
