The SHIH-TZU is considered a Tibetan breed but is actually Chinese. It is probably the result of a liaison between a Pekinese and a Lhasa Apso that took place at the Chinese court. In any case, it was the favorite dog in the Forbidden City from the seventh century on. Anyone who has gotten to know a good example of the breed will easily understand its favored position there. The Shih-Tzu is a perfect companion dog for city dwellers with a yen for a pet to coddle. This little dog is all charm and personality; loving, self-confident and very playful. It prefers the comforts of an apartment to the exertion of long walks, even though it is very robust. Its heart is where its people are and where it can count on being safe, petted and spoiled. This dog suffers from the heat, and its coat requires regular care. The Shih-Tzu was bred for one reason and one reason only; to be loved, and loving is its greatest talent.
