The (AUSTRALIAN) SILKY TERRIER probably came into being through the crossing of Yorkshire and Australian Terriers, but no one knows for sure. In spite of its diminutive size, the Silky is a terrier through and through. It is an active dog that needs a lot of physical exercise. It also tends to be quite demanding of attention and entertainment. But most people who have gotten to know this dog think the effort is well worth it.

The Silky is considered primarily a companion dog, but it is also an excellent catcher of rats and snakes. It is very intelligent and extremely fast - both physically and mentally - and, though obstinate, responds positively to obedience training. When you add all these qualities together, you end up with a kind of perpetual mobile.

The Silky Terrier is definitely not a low-key dog. It is meant for city people who are active and want a small dog, but one with plenty of spirit and energy. No one has told the Silky how little it is, and it is in fact a giant dog in a small body.

To keep its coat looking glossy and neat, the Silky needs regular grooming. When looking for a Silky, you should try to find a breeder who has been raising this breed for several years because sometimes Yorkshires are sold as Silkies, and vice versa.
