The SOFT-COATED WHEATEN TERRIER was Ireland's dog-of-all-work, responsible for herding animals, guarding the homestead and hunting wild animals. Like many terriers, it is very lively, clever and playful. Although it is a truly outstanding working dog, it is also a wonderful companion dog and playmate for children. It is an ideal size and adjusts equally well to country and city life, as long as it can be close to its family. It is reliable and more gentle and friendly than most terriers.

The Wheaten has to get a lot of exercise or it will become hyperactive. It also needs a lot of attention and a sense of being included. That is why it gets very unhappy if left alone too long. The Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier is generally friendly toward strangers, but may get into fights with other male dogs. It is intelligent, but has one typical terrier trait, and that is stubbornness combined with huge energy. This dog can be difficult to train. If it succeeds in convincing you, while it is a cute little teddy bear of a puppy, that it is a truly delightful lap dog, you will have trouble for the rest of its life keeping if off your bed. So you have to make up your mind early what you are willing to put up with, and stick with your decision.
