The YORKSHIRE TERRIER was originally developed in Yorkshire to get rid of rats in the narrow passages of the local coal mines. Today's Yorkshire is still a true terrier; proud, lively, merry, yappy and affectionate. It is a toy breed, but it doesn't know that, and it is better if it is not treated like a delicate flower. It doesn't need long walks, but does want to get outside. As long as its sleeping basket is not kept next to the radiator, it won't need a coat when it goes out. The Yorkshire Terrier is not a Barbie Doll, but a real, rugged little dog that happens to come in a portable size. The time saved not having to take long walks is needed, however, for grooming. The Yorkshire's fine hair has to be brushed and combed regularly. The Yorkshire Terrier has to be trained firmly and thoroughly because it has all the makings of a megalomaniac and tyrant - a trait you, as a human, might possible find charming, but that other dogs don't look upon fondly. A Yorkshire whose owner picks it up every time another dog approaches will miss out on what is most interesting in life; social contact. Because Yorkies are so popular, it is important to buy from a breeder who keeps all the dogs - not just the puppies - in the house with the family, rather than in boxes in the cellar. Never buy from a breeder whose dogs tremble or are nervous or aggressive.
